Pumpkins
 
When Halloween comes, almost every house is decorated with carved pumpkins. It is one of the most classic Halloween elements.
 
This story goes back to ancient Ireland, where the Celts would carve turnips and place an ember inside to keep evil spirits away. After the Irish migrated to the USA during the potato famine, they replaced turnips with more accommodating pumpkins.

Witch
 
The iconic witch with a pointy hat, a long broomstick, and a hooked nose is another classic Halloween element.
 
The word “witch” is derived from “Wicca”, which means “wise ones”. In the Middle Ages, witches were believed to have supernatural powers and on the night of Halloween, the veil between worlds thinned, and magical energy enhanced, making witches more powerful. 


Bat
 
Another famous Halloween element is the bat, and its association with Halloween goes back to the roots of Samhain. 
 
The bonfires burned at Samhain would attract hoards of flying insects and bugs, which caused bats to gather and eat them. That’s why bats became closely linked to Halloween. 


Ghosts
 
Ghosts can freely wander around the living world, that’s why they have always been a perfect element of Halloween. 
 
Since Halloween is the time when the living and dead was at their thinnest, people believe that ghosts try to find their way out actively on this day, coming back to visit their family and friends.  


Spiders
 
In ancient times, spiders were symbols of magic and mystery. They were considered weavers of fate and oracles of death. 
 
Now, add the fact that spiders are visually horrifying and are often found in creepy places, no wonder they naturally evoke an unsettling feeling. 


Skeletons & skulls
 
Skeletons and skulls are striking Halloween symbols because they represent death or danger. 
 
It is a great idea to decorate skeletons and skulls for Halloween. Put them around your house strategically to get a scary haunted atmosphere.
